Rail to the Rescue and Intermodal Issues in China

On Track

The Port of Long Beach just completed the construction of a new rail project. The ability to shift even more cargo to train will increase the efficiency of how goods move around within the port.

“This project will streamline operations and reduce truck trips at a time we are experiencing an unprecedented growth in cargo,” said Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero. “Our investments in on-dock rail will help the Port remain globally competitive and environmentally sustainable well into the future.”

With the fresh doubled tracks between Pier G - J, it will alleviate trucking traffic and is projected to increase rail efficiency by 25%.

Hopefully, this will also help clear the backlogs at the second-busiest container seaport in the US.

Who knows, maybe your package will arrive on time?

Shanghai in Shambles

The Zhengzhou, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen airports have been bearing the brunt of Shanghai’s near standstill. This has led to shortages of storage and cargo pallets, not to mention congestion.

Although flight capacity has somewhat stabilized and factories have begun reopening, trucking issues are proving to be a major problem.

There are longer wait times for vessels and limited transportation to and from the seaport and airport. This is causing wait times and rates to go up.

Shanghai is set to perform another round of COVID testing to see if they can reopen which will hopefully happen in the near future. However, other major cities are still under lockdown and other cities are under threat to go into lockdown.

Experts are predicting that logistic disruptions will continue until at least mid-may before returning to normal.
